For a very long while, perhaps due to its classic style, tile has been one of the most popular flooring choices. It can easily be cleaned with a broom and a mop, it doesn’t mind water, and it will last for years and years to come. However, tile isn’t the right choice for every room, every home, and every homeowner. If you’re trying to decide whether or not to use tile, be sure to carefully review our list of the pros and cons of tile flooring.
Pros and Cons of Tile Flooring
ELEGANT APPEARANCE. Tile is a classic flooring option with a lovely appearance. Still a timeless choice, it has been used and loved since antiquity. Plus, it’s available in a variety of colors, patterns, sizes, and textures, so you won’t struggle to find a tile that matches your room’s interior design.
DURABILITY. Tiles are extremely durable and can last a lifetime. You won’t have to worry about dents, stains, scratches, or water damage. It makes a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, since water isn’t a concern.
SIMPLE MAINTENANCE. Tile is very easy to clean. As long as you sweep and mop regularly, you shouldn’t have any problems. Spills and stains can typically be wiped away, and set-in stains can be removed with a heavy-duty cleaner.
VALUE. Because it is so long-lasting and easy to maintain, tile is a worthwhile investment in your home. It’s popular with homebuyers and it can increase your home’s value. However, if you want it to appeal to future buyers, be sure to pick a classic style in a neutral color.
UNAPPEALING TEXTURE. Unlike carpet, tile is very hard and very cold. It isn’t pleasant to stand on for long periods of time and if you live in a colder climate, you may want to invest in a good pair of slippers! Additionally, it won’t muffle sounds and it can become quite slippery when wet (depending on the texture).
DIFFICULT INSTALLATION AND REPAIR. Tiles are heavy and difficult to cut, so they can’t easily be DIYed by an amateur (though it is certainly possible). Plus, tiles vary a lot in their color and texture, making it difficult to find suitable replacement tiles. Thus, if you install a tile floor, be sure to stow away some extra tiles for emergency repairs.
DIRTY GROUT. Although tiles are easy to clean, the grout between tiles loves to soak up dirt and grime, and it will likely become discolored over time. Cleaning the floors regularly and thoroughly will improve the grout’s appearance, but for best results, you will need to apply a grout sealer.
